Get answers about persistent snoring, daytime sleepiness, interrupted sleep, and other sleep concerns. Serene Mental Health and Sleep offers convenient telehealth evaluations to help determine whether diagnostic sleep testing or specialist referral may be appropriate.
A sleep study records body signals during sleep to help a clinician identify certain sleep disorders. Depending on the test, it may measure breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, brain activity, and movement. The appropriate study depends on your symptoms, medical history, and clinical assessment.
An initial sleep evaluation is a conversation about your health, sleep patterns, medications, and daytime functioning. It is different from the diagnostic test itself. Some sleep concerns can be evaluated without a sleep study; others need testing or specialist care.
Sleep problems can affect concentration, energy, mood, and daily life. Looking at sleep alongside mental health helps the clinician consider contributing factors and plan appropriate next steps. Testing can provide useful evidence, but it does not diagnose every sleep complaint or guarantee a particular outcome.
Talk with a clinician if you experience:
• Loud or persistent snoring
• Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
• Excessive daytime sleepiness
• Waking up feeling unrefreshed
• Difficulty staying asleep
• Unexplained fatigue
• Sleep-related breathing concerns
• Symptoms suggesting narcolepsy or another complex sleep disorder
No single symptom confirms a diagnosis. Your clinician considers the pattern of symptoms, your medical history, and other possible causes before recommending testing.
Request a sleep evaluation through Online Appointments or call (713) 465-9282 to discuss the next step.
1. Initial Telehealth Consultation
Discuss your symptoms, sleep patterns, medications, medical history, and mental health concerns with a clinician. This assessment helps identify what may be affecting your rest.
2. Determining Appropriate Testing
Your provider assesses whether a home sleep apnea test, a specialist evaluation, or another diagnostic approach is clinically appropriate. Not every sleep complaint requires a study.
3. Completing Recommended Testing
If testing is ordered, follow the instructions from the testing service or specialist. Ask that team about device setup, preparation, and your usual medications; do not change prescribed medicines without guidance.
4. Reviewing the Results
Results are discussed and explained, with follow-up coordinated as appropriate. Ask what the findings show, what they cannot rule out, and whether further evaluation is needed.
5. Treatment Planning
The clinician discusses next steps, treatment options, and referrals based on the findings. Depending on the diagnosis, care may involve behavioral approaches, medication management, sleep apnea treatment through the appropriate provider, or specialist services.
Testing arrangements depend on the recommended study and testing provider. A telehealth consultation does not automatically include a home device or an in-lab study.
A home sleep apnea test may be appropriate for certain adults when obstructive sleep apnea is suspected. It records a limited set of signals, such as breathing and oxygen levels, in your usual sleeping environment. It is not a universal test for insomnia, narcolepsy, or every sleep disorder. A clinician determines whether it is suitable for you.
An attended overnight study records more detailed information, including sleep stages, breathing, oxygen levels, and movement. A specialist may recommend it when symptoms are complex, when a home test is unsuitable, or when further assessment is needed. Suspected narcolepsy may require an overnight study followed by a daytime multiple sleep latency test.
Start with a sleep evaluation in Houston or a telehealth sleep consultation for eligible Texas patients. Discuss which test, if any, fits your symptoms and health history. Referral and prior authorization requirements vary by clinician, testing provider, and insurance plan. Confirm where testing will occur, who will interpret it, and how follow-up will be arranged.

Sleep and mental health together
Discuss sleep concerns alongside mood, anxiety, attention, medications, and other factors that may affect your rest.
Individualized assessment
Your symptoms, history, and goals guide the evaluation and treatment planning. Testing and referrals are considered when appropriate.
Clear next steps
Ask questions about recommended testing, follow-up, and treatment options so you understand how to move forward. Before scheduling a study, confirm the testing provider, insurance requirements, and how results will be reviewed.
Costs vary with the type of study, insurance benefits and medical necessity, the testing facility or service, clinical consultations, and follow-up appointments. Home sleep apnea testing and in-lab testing involve different services, so request estimates for the specific testing recommended.
Insurance coverage is not automatic. Check your deductible, copay or coinsurance, network participation, and any referral or prior authorization requirements before scheduling. Coverage for a consultation does not necessarily mean the separate sleep test is covered.
Testing performed by a third party may be billed separately from Serene Mental Health and Sleep consultation fees. Ask the testing provider and your insurer for an itemized estimate and confirmation of benefits.
Review the clinic’s Insurance page for general plan information. Call (713) 465-9282 to ask about consultation coverage or request an appointment through Online Appointments.

A sleep study is a diagnostic test that records selected body signals while you sleep. Different studies measure different signals and answer different clinical questions. Your provider uses the findings together with your symptoms and medical history to assess certain sleep disorders and recommend next steps.
Start with a clinical evaluation if snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, daytime sleepiness, or ongoing sleep disruption is affecting you. These symptoms do not confirm a diagnosis by themselves. A clinician reviews your history, medications, sleep schedule, and other health factors to decide whether testing or another approach is appropriate.
Yes. Serene Mental Health and Sleep offers telehealth consultations for eligible Texas patients to discuss sleep concerns and possible next steps. The consultation is separate from diagnostic testing. If testing is recommended, the type of study and testing provider determine whether it takes place at home or in a sleep center.
A home sleep apnea test records a limited set of signals to assess suspected obstructive sleep apnea in suitable patients. In-lab polysomnography provides more detailed monitoring, including sleep stages and movement. Your symptoms, medical history, and prior results guide the choice. Complex concerns may require specialist evaluation and additional testing.
Yes. Appropriate sleep testing can help diagnose sleep apnea and assess its severity. A home sleep apnea test may be suitable for some adults with suspected obstructive sleep apnea; other patients need in-lab testing. A clinician interprets the findings alongside your symptoms and health history before recommending treatment.
Timing depends on consultation availability, the recommended test, insurance requirements, testing-provider scheduling, and interpretation of the results. Some studies involve overnight monitoring, while additional tests or follow-up may be needed. Ask the clinician and testing provider for an estimate specific to your care; there is no single guaranteed timeline.
Coverage depends on your plan, medical necessity, network participation, and any referral or prior authorization requirements. Check benefits for both the consultation and the testing service before scheduling. Third-party testing and follow-up visits may have separate charges. The clinic’s general insurance information does not guarantee coverage for a particular test.
Your clinician reviews the quality of the recording and whether the results explain your symptoms. A negative, inconclusive, or technically inadequate home sleep apnea test may require in-lab polysomnography for further evaluation. Discuss the recommended next step, insurance authorization, and any additional charges with the clinician and testing provider.
Use the existing Online Appointments page or call (713) 465-9282 to request an initial evaluation. Explain that you are seeking help with a sleep concern. The clinic can discuss appointment options and next steps. Submitting a request does not automatically confirm an appointment or mean that a sleep test has been ordered.
Start with the clinic’s telehealth evaluation to discuss whether testing is appropriate. Device arrangements, instructions, and testing locations depend on the testing service or specialist involved. Confirm these details with the clinic before scheduling. This page does not represent that Serene ships testing devices or operates an on-site sleep laboratory.
